  1. Hi! This is actually my 2nd fave quote since my favorite one is the one you used as an example wehehehe ^^0

“The bonds of family bind both ways. They bind us up, support us, help us. And they are also a bond from which it is difficult, perhaps impossible to extricate oneself.” – Desire to the crowd gathered for Morpheus’ wake, from The Sandman Volume 10 (The Wake)

Here’s my blog entry as well: http://feifu.blogspot.com/2009/03/my-avalonph-contest-entry.html

    *crossing my fingers*

Oh, and good luck to all other contest entries!
And happy 10th year anniv, avalon.ph! Thanks for this contest. It was fun going through my Sandman books again ^_^

  2. Happy 10th anniversary, Avalon.ph! =)

It’s hard to pick a single favorite quote, but this is one of my very favorites, from The Sandman:

“Have you ever been in love? Horrible, isn’t it? It makes you so vulnerable. It opens your chest and it opens your heart and it means someone can get inside you and mess you up. You build up all these defenses. You build up this whole armor, for years, so nothing can hurt you, then one stupid person, no different from any other stupid person, wanders into your stupid life. You give them a piece of you. They don’t ask for it. They do something dumb one day like kiss you, or smile at you, and then your life isn’t your own anymore. Love takes hostages. It gets inside you. It eats you out and leaves you crying in the darkness, so a simple phrase like ‘Maybe we should just be friends’ or ‘How very perceptive’ turns into a glass splinter working its way into your heart. It hurts. Not just in the imagination. Not just in the mind. It’s a soul-hurt, a body-hurt, a real gets-inside-you-and-rips-you-apart pain. Nothing should be able to do that. Especially not love. I hate love.”

    – Rose Walker in “The Sandman: The Kindly Ones” by Neil Gaiman

  3. One decade old, hurrah! Cheers to more decades of books and comics and moleskine notebooks!

    Here’s my favorite quote:

“Potentially evil. Potentially good, too, I suppose. Just this huge powerful potentiality, waiting to be shaped. Anyway, why’re we talking about this good and evil? They’re just names for sides. We know that.”

-the demon Crowley, from Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett

Here’s my blog link (I opened it to contacts only): http://kellybellybutton.multiply.com/journal/item/229/Morally_Ambiguous_and_Shades_of_Gray

    Thank you! 🙂

  4. Hey Jasper, I’m looking forward to this one hehe. Here’s my quote:

“I want to see life. I want to hold it in my hands. I want to leave a footprint on the sand of a desert island. I want to play football with people. I want… I want everything.”

    – Nobody Owens, The Graveyard Book

I also posted about the contest here. Cheers!

  5. Hi Jasper. Congratulations on Avalon’s 10th year anniversary ^^

    Favorite quote is:

‘Omnia mutantur, nihil interit‘ Everything changes, but nothing is truly lost”

-Dream (Daniel) from Sandman #74 “The Exile”

And of course, posted about the contest (amongst other things) here

Good luck with this, and more power! ^^

  6. Delirium, who was once known as Delight, wanted to look for Destruction and Dream/Morpheus went with her in her search.

She then had this “guess that word game” going on which I believe most of us do especially when we are looking for a common word that suddenly escapes us. So here she goes, asking about this pseudo big word and Dream answers her nonchalantly – Change. She was looking for the word Change.

It struck me because the Endless who are little – if not at all – affected of Change seems to be more aware and concerned of change’s nature rather that us who are prone to the effects of time passing.:)

    ==================

“Um. What’s the name for things not being the same always. You know, I’m sure there is one. Isn’t there? there must be a word for it… The thing that let’s you know Time is happening. is there a word?”

    “Change.”

    – Dream and Delirium, Sandman: Brief Lives 3

…and here is my post about this contest, created with high hopes that i win the Moleskine. hehe -> http://tinyurl.com/b56w75

  7. This is one of my favorite quotes ever! (aside from the one already posted – Rose Walker talking about love)

    “I like the stars.
It’s the illusion of permanence, I think.
I mean, they’re always flaring up and caving in and going out.
But from here, I can pretend…
I can pretend that things last.
I can pretend that lives last longer than moments.
    Gods come, and gods go.
Mortals flicker and flash and fade.
    Worlds don’t last;
and stars and galaxies are transient, fleeting things
that twinkle like fireflies and vanish into cold and dust.
    But I can pretend.”
~ Destruction (of The Endless), The Sandman: Brief Lives by Neil Gaiman

  8. hi,

i just came across this contest in facebook. i really love your website! it’s a bummer that we only get to submit one quote. hehehe…

    anyway, here goes…

ideas are more difficult to kill than people, but they can be killed, in the end. from american gods.

    here’s my post…

  9. “THE MAPMAKER

One describes a tale best by telling the tale. You see? The way one describes a story, to oneself or to the world is by telling the story. It is a balancing act and it is a dream. The more accurate the map, the more it resembles the territory. The most accurate map possible would be the territory, and thus would be perfectly useless.

The tale is the map that is the territory.

    You must remember this.”

The Mapmaker is taken from the short story entitled Other People (from Neil Gaiman’s Fragile Things). He also used this quote as a chapter starter for Ch19 in his novel American Gods (labeled: – from the Notebooks of Mr. Ibis).

It’s creative, it requires the reader to think, and it has a great message (qualities seen in all of his stories). It was stuck in my mind for the longest time and i think i STILL have it memorized since the last time I read Fragile Things (a few years ago…). 😀

  10. Picking my favorite Gaiman quote would be next to impossible! Then you took a step further by limiting it to ONE! Oh agony!! (Also because most of the quotes posted before me were so wonderful. Those were my faves too! T_T) But here’s mine:

“Is the story less true because it is a lie?” – Signal to Noise (Probably the Gaiman work I least enjoyed… because it hurt.)

I’ve written this quote down, memorized it, read it over and over again, and yet there is something about it I can never grasp. I never really understood it… Maybe that’s why I’ll never forget.

  11. Here’s my favorite quote (for the moment, as it seems to be most appropriate at this time of my life):

“I lost some time once. It’s always in the last place you look for it.”

    – Delirium
    Sandman
    Season of Mists

  12. Trust ghosts. Trust those that you have
helped to help you in their turn.
    Trust dreams.
Trust your heart, and trust your story.

    ~Instructions, from Fragile Things

  13. Everybody has a secret world inside of them. All of the people of the world, I mean everybody. No matter how dull and boring they are on the outside, inside them they’ve all got unimaginable, magnificent, wonderful, stupid, amazing worlds. Not just one world. Hundreds of them. Thousands maybe.
    – “The Sandman”

  14. “It’s not hard to own something. Or everything. You just have to know that it’s yours, and then be willing to let it go.” — Stardust

  15. One of the best quotes that i can somehow relate to

“If I tell you something weird… will you think I’m crazy?”- Helena from mirror mask

  16. “I left because I was curious. And because I was tired. Life as a human contains substance I never dreamed of in the Dreaming, Lord. The little victories, and the tiny defeats. I had my reasons.”

–Gilbert, in SANDMAN #16: “Lost Hearts”

  17. What power would Hell have if those imprisoned there were not able to dream of Heaven?

    one of the sandman books.

  18. “Sometimes we can choose the path we follow. Sometimes our choices are made for us. And sometimes we have no choice at all.”

~Dream, to Lucien, SANDMAN: Season of Mists

  19. “I don’t want whatever I want. Nobody does. Not really. What kind of fun would it be if I just got everything I ever wanted? Just like that, and it didn’t mean anything. What then?”

    -Coraline

  20. “Cats don’t need names. They already know who they are.” – Cat, Coraline

  21. “I have always felt that violence was the last refuge of the incompetent, and empty threats the final sanctuary of the terminally inept.” -Marquis de Carabas (Neverwhere, Ch. 10)

  22. “The squirrel has not yet found the acorn that will grow into the oak that will be cut to form the cradle of the babe who will grow to slay me.”

    – the witch-queen, Stardust, Chapter Five 🙂

  23. Hi!
Congratulations for the strong 10 years of your business! Cheers!

This is my favorite Neil Gaiman book quote:

“But the price of getting what you want, is getting what you once wanted.” -Dream (Sandman)

    Goodluck to everyone joining!

  24. “-His madness… His madness keeps him sane.”
    – And do you think he is the only one, my sister?”

Delirium and Dream, in Fables and Reflections.

  25. “…The pecuiliarity of most things we think of as fragile is how tough they truly are. There were tricks we did with eggs as children, to show how they were, in reality, tiny load-bearing marble halls; while the beat of the wings of a butterfly in the right place, we are told, can create a hurricane across the ocean. Hearts may break, but hearts are the toughest of muscles able to pump for a lifetime, seventy times a minute, and scarcely falter along the way. Even dreams, the most delicate and intangible of things, can prove remarkably difficult to kill.”

  26. My favorite book quote is actually a short conversation from Coraline and her mom. It went like this:

    “..where does that door go?”
    “Nowhere, dear”
    “It has to go somewhere..”

    -Coraline

  27. “I wonder, Titania. I wonder if I have done right. And I wonder why I wonder. Will is a willing vehicle for the great stories. Through him they will live for an age of man; and his words will echo down through time. It is what he wanted.

But he did not understand the price. Mortals never do. They only see the prize, their heart’s desire, their dream… But the price of getting what you want, is getting what once you wanted.” – Dream in A Midsummer Nights Dream (Dream Country)

  28. “You get what everyone gets. You get a lifetime.”

-Death in Sandman, answering the so-called injustice of some living for just minutes while others lived for thousands of years (i.e. dead baby and fifteen-thousand-year-old Bernie Capaz).

  29. here’s my quote:

“Bodies are strange. Some people have real problems with what goes on inside them. You find out that inside someone you know there’s just mucous and meat and slime and bone. They menstruate, salivate, defecate and cry. You know? Sometimes it can just kill the romance.”

From Fables and Reflections in the story about Adam and his three wives. =)

  30. Here’s my quote.

“Tristane and Yvaine were happy together. Not foreverafter, for Time, the thief, eventually takes all things into his dusty storehouse, but they were happy, as these things go, for a long while.”
    –Stardust

  31. My fave quote comes from the book Neverwhere.

“You have a good heart, Sometimes that’s enough to see you safe wherever you go. But mostly, it’s not.”

    -Old Woman
    (Neverwhere)

    Congrats, Jasper!
More power to your business! Wooot! = )

  32. She found the first body in stairwell.

That night, after the shower, which could not wash what she had to do away, not really, she said to her husband. “I’m scared.”

    “Of what?”

“That this job is making me hard. That it’s making me someone else. Someone I don’t know anymore.”

He pulled her close and held her, and they stayed touching, skin to skin, until dawn.

-From the short story Strange Little Girls in Fragile Things

  33. I have my own favorites for they ring true to every human life & I believe in them:

“What I say is, a town isn’t a town without a bookstore. It may call itself a town, but unless it’s got a bookstore it knows it’s not fooling a soul.” — Neil Gaiman (American Gods)

“Each person who ever was or is or will be has a song. It isn’t a song that anybody else wrote. It has its own melody, it has its own words. Very few people get to sing their song. Most of us fear that we cannot do it justice with our voices, or that our words are too foolish or too honest, or too odd. So people live their song instead.” — Neil Gaiman (Anansi Boys)

“Everybody has a secret world inside of them. All of the people of the world, I mean everybody. No matter how dull and boring they are on the outside, inside them they’ve all got unimaginable, magnificent, wonderful, stupid, amazing worlds. Not just one world. Hundreds of them. Thousands maybe.” — Neil Gaiman (The Sandman)

    Thanks Jasper! 🙂

  34. “All Bette’s stories have happy endings. That’s because she knows where to stop. She’s realized the real problem with stories — if you keep them going long enough, they always end in death.”

–John Dee in Sandman #5 “Passengers”
